Creative Reminiscence: How Art, Music and Storytelling Can Help

13/11/2025

For people living with a dementia, art, music and storytelling can open gentle pathways to memory, emotion, and connection even when conversation becomes more challenging.

Creative reminiscence isn’t about skill or talent; it’s about expression. It’s about the shared joy of painting, humming or singing a tune, or sharing stories of a childhood holiday. These moments don’t just spark memories, they can nurture identity, calm anxiety, and bring people closer together.

The Power of Music
A familiar song can transport someone back decades in a heartbeat stirring laughter, memories, or simply the comfort of recognition.

Listening to old favourites, singing together, or creating simple playlists can:
  • Encourage movement and communication
  • Boost mood and reduce agitation
  • Help carers and loved ones reconnect emotionally

Top tip: Come along to the Melody Memory Choir which runs at Medina Lodge in Cowes on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month from 10.30 – 12!

Art as Expression
Art allows people to express feelings that can be hard to put into words. Whether it’s painting, collage, or simply colouring, the process can be soothing and confidence-building.

There’s no right or wrong — it’s about being present, not producing a masterpiece.
  • Painting familiar scenes (like the seaside, gardens, or pets) can spark conversation.
  • Using textures, colours, and patterns can stimulate the senses.
  • Group sessions help reduce isolation and encourage shared creativity.

Even something as simple as sorting coloured buttons or arranging flowers can feel creative and purposeful.

Storytelling and Memory Sharing
Stories are part of who we are. For someone living with a dementia, storytelling can be a way to share, connect, and feel valued.

Try:
  • Talking about old photos and asking gentle, open questions (“What was this day like?”)
  • Writing down shared memories together in a small notebook
  • Creating a “memory box” filled with meaningful objects — a holiday postcard, a shell, a family recipe

You could also record short audio stories or poems together. Sometimes just listening to a familiar voice can be deeply comforting. For carers, storytelling can become a way to preserve family history while strengthening the bond you already share.

Why Creativity Matters
Creative activities can:
  • Reduce anxiety and depression
  • Strengthen confidence and communication
  • Encourage focus and joy in the present moment
  • Remind people of who they are — not just their diagnosis

Most importantly, creative reminiscence brings people together!

Getting Started
You don’t need fancy materials or training.
  • Play favourite songs from the past
  • Use old magazines, postcards, or local photos to make a collage
  • Try painting or clay modelling
  • Keep a simple “memory scrapbook” you can add to over time
  • Look online for photos from the past – beaches, street parties, fashion, anything you think might spark a memory or conversation.

Call Parklands Dementia Resource Centre on 01983 220200 to discuss our Wellbeing Club reminiscence sessions.
