After spending 30 years working in banking and finance, Jane went to work as an administrator for a group of nursing homes where she learnt about caring for the elderly, especially those with a dementia.

During this time, Jane became aware of the Ryde Alzheimer Café being run by one of her colleagues. All this knowledge proved essential when she became the carer for her mother for 5 years.

BARRY JACKMAN

Picture

Barry is an Islander who spent a career in education. He and his wife, Ruth, taught in a number of schools in the UK (including the Island) and on the mainland. For seventeen years they worked in International schools abroad in Germany and in The Middle and Far East. Following retirement, they left the family home in Gatcombe and relocated to the Charente in France until Ruth was diagnosed with Alzheimer's when they returned home.

Barry was dismayed to find how little support was available for families living with dementia and set about supporting the charity and becoming a founder member of The Dementia Awareness Partnership, the outreach teaching programme. In the ten years he has supported the charity, he has witnessed voluntary provision and the close links with Adult Social Care begin to change the way dementia care is practised on the Island.

The opening of Parklands is indicative of the proactive approach the charity has demonstrated. Barry is proud to be associated with our core values and the fact that we value the face to face contact with our Island community.
