James Goode is taking part in the Great South Run to raise money for Alzheimer Café Isle of Wight!9/9/2025
Another member of our fantastic community is raising money for Alzheimer Café Isle of Wight. Here is James' story. "We lost Mum to Alzheimers in the November of 2021, her sole carer was Dad and started her decline about four years before she eventually had to be placed in the care of a local residential home (Mum lost the capacity for speech and I had not had a meaningful conversation with her for several years, which we all missed dreadfully). It was an incredibly distressing and emotional experience for us all, especially for Dad as he was at the forefront and the story is sadly not a unique one either, hence my keenness to support this local charity and hope it can continue to support other families and individuals affected by Alzheimers. I have not done any formal exercise since my school days and at the age of 51, I embarked on a 'Couch to 5K' running program that my place of work offered (I am a Social, Emotional and Mental Health Teaching Assistant at Cowes Enterprise College) as part of their well-being support. I now run regularly and decided to set myself the challenge of The Great South Run (a 10 mile run around Southsea and Portsmouth) and wanted to raise money for a charity which would have the added incentive of pushing me to succeed in my goal!"
